National History Museum

Although we live right outside one of the greatest cities in the world, I feel like we so rarely trek into DC on the weekends. I think a lot of it has to do with the fact we both have/had worked down there and after making that trek five days a week,it's the last place we want to be. But, that is starting to change. Now that the kids are getting older - especially Bridget - there are a lot of incredible (and did I mention free!) things to do. Yesterday Bridget and I headed downtown with two girls from ballet - Sophia and Juliana - and their moms to see the dinosaurs at the National History Museum. After a six hour journey, we had a very happy girl who went to bed at 7:20!

Waiting for the metro - or as Bridget calls it - the "bumper train." Evidently when we pass it in the car, it sounds so loud hence..."bumper train." It was the first time all of three of them had taken the metro. Notice, Miss Lady's backpack. I was shocked that she wore it almost the entire day. I figure if you need snacks, you can carry them!

Honest reaction to the train as it starting moving. Look at the sheer joy on her face.

SOOOO...what was not so great about the metro...was the fact there was a station outtage. We had to hop a bus between stations and let's just say this added 90 minutes to our entire trip - there and back. We all agreed driving would have been the better option given the circumstances, but the girls were pumped we got to take "two trains and one bus." It's the little things and the beauty of mass transportation that we don't see that makes them happy.

Enamoured with the metro. I am sure this will cost me a sick day.

Getting to see the dinosaurs. They loved it. I was surprised how attentive and interested Bridget was. It made it really fun.

Quite certain the person who cleans the glass wouldn't appreciate this. Again, this will probably cost me a sick day.

The highlight of the day was the live butterfly exhibit. There were hundreds of butterflies flying all around us. This is Bridget as close as she wanted to get to a butterfly.

After a few minutes, Bridget started to sweet talk the butterflies to land on her.

Literally landing in our hair...one kid had one land on his bum and it wouldn't move the entire time.

On the mall.

Riding her favorite thing! Love her smile in this one. She told me that was her princess smile.

Bridget's face pretty much sums up the journey home. And, the fact that Sophia's mom had to break out the nighttime binky meant bad news for fellow passengers especially when they started shouting "no way."
